WILL IT RAIN? WILL IT SLEET? WILL IT SNOW! IT WILL BE FREEZING!!!!

Bottom Line
We continue to anticipate very cold conditions beginning on Sunday night, in addition to the chance for winter precipitation on Monday and Tuesday. This remains a very uncertain forecast that will be impacted by small changes in temperature and the track of the storm system.

What Has Changed Since Previous Email?
  • There are changes in the chances for snow and freezing rain during the early part of next week, with snow slightly more likely than previously and freezing rain chances similar to this morning’s forecast.
  • We continue to stress the uncertainty in the forecast, as forecast models continue to present an array of different scenarios.
Overview
A cold front is expected to push through the area on Saturday, bringing gusty north winds and colder temperatures in its wake. A further surge of arctic air arrives later on Sunday, with an extended period of low temperatures below freezing beginning on Sunday night. Currently, we are forecasting low temperatures in the 20s to near 30 beginning on Sunday night and lasting through at least Tuesday night. Hard freeze conditions (2 hours or more with temperatures of 24 degrees or below) are likely for locations north of the I-10 corridor and possible throughout the rest of the Greater Houston area. It’s likely that temperatures will get above freezing each afternoon. However, there remains a very low but nonzero chance that temperatures on Tuesday will remain below freezing for the duration of the day.

The forecast for potential snow/sleet/freezing rain remains complex with a significant amount of uncertainty. A storm system will move into the area on Monday, with precipitation beginning as early as Monday afternoon. Precipitation chances will be highest, with the greatest risk for winter precipitation, between Monday night and Tuesday morning. Details are still very difficult to iron out, as changes in the type and amount of precipitation will be subject to change based on small fluctuations in the temperature and the timing of the storm system. That being said, we cannot rule out the possibility of accumulating snow, freezing rain, sleet, or a mix of these types of precipitation. Furthermore, we could see multiple changes in precipitation type, from rain to snow/sleet/freezing rain or vice versa.

This is still pretty far out into the future, so details will certainly change in the coming days.  Please continue to monitor and we will maintain daily briefs the rest of this week, and at least twice a day briefs over the weekend.

Alternate Possibilities
Changes in the track of the storm system will still drive the alternate forecast possibilities for this event. If the storm tracks closer to the coast or inland, we could see higher snow and ice amounts. Likewise, if it tracks further offshore, we could see much less precipitation.
