WOODBRANCH PATROL CAN STRUCK WHILE DIRECTING TRAFFIC

Just after 3 a.m. as troopers were about to reopen FM1485 after being closed for the double fatal accident another accident took place. Woodbranch was assisting with traffic control. Officer Rodriguez was sitting in his patrol car which was totally blocking the westbound lane of FM 1485 at Oak Grove when his vehicle was struck.
Julie Kathleen Strap, age 27 was westbound with two male passengers in the vehicle when troopers feel she was distracted as she came upon the patrol car. At the last minute, she swerved, the left side of her Explorer striking the left side of the patrol car. There were no injuries however the patrol car suffered extensive damage to the left side. Officer Rodriguez stated that as she exited her vehicle her first question was, “what are you doing in the middle of the road?”
Dashcam video shows the collision in the well-lit intersection and shows the emergency lights were activated.
Within minutes of that accident, a Montgomery County deputy who was also assisting with traffic control was almost struck by another motorist as he stood in the road directing traffic. DPS performed a field sobriety test and determined even though he had been drinking earlier in the evening he was not impaired.
