No Immediate Fatalities in Major Truck Pile-Up on I-10
FROM WKRG-TV
Around 1:30 Thursday afternoon, an accident involving a truck and five other vehicles was reported on I-10 eastbound on the Broad Street overpass. A red car involved in the wreck was completely crumpled underneath the tractor trailer.
Despite the severity of the accident, authorities have confirmed there are no immediate fatalities. Ten people were rushed to local hospitals. Their condition is unknown at this time.
At least one victim is currently in critical condition, clinging to life. Other media reports suggesting this victim has been killed are inaccurate, authorities told News 5.
Traffic is currently being detoured on the eastbound side, as drivers are being told to avoid I-10 EB. Westbound traffic is moving again.
Emergency crews were seen cleaning up traffic debris and investigators interviewing witnesses, one of which spoke to News 5.
TRUCK DRIVER AT FAULT?
The driver of a vehicle involved in the crash spoke to News 5’s Rose Ann Haven as she was filling out an accident report on the side of the highway.
The woman, too shaken up to appear on camera, said she was driving to Sandestin with her family when she noticed a truck swerving for several miles.
The woman says the truck driver appeared to be distracted, and his head was “bobbing up and down.”
“We couldn’t even see his head,” the woman said.
Shortly after noticing this, the truck driver collided with her vehicle, the woman said, causing a pile-up accident. The woman and her family members in the car say they are lucky to be alive.
“I prayed to the lord to cover my family,” she added.
The truck driver, who was traveling with a child in the passenger seat, was seen on the side of the roadway talking to authorities. Both he and the young boy appear to be okay.
