Youngest Victim of Dobbin Home Explosion Out of Hospital

Investigation continues into Dobbin home explosion that claimed two lives and seriously injured infant.

Family members have confirmed that the youngest victim of the June explosion has been released from the hospital and his condition continues to improve. 8 month old Wyatt Mock Smith was found in the debris of the home explosion which ultimately took the lives of his Grandmother and Great Aunt. He was found and rescued by a telephone company employee who was working across the street at the time of the explosion. Consolidated Telephone employee Bart Hogan and DPS Trooper John Bradford were among the first on scene, and along with nearby residents, joined in the search for the victims. Lena Mock Knight was the first to be found and told the rescuers that her sister and baby were still trapped in what was left of their home.

Hogan and Dobbin resident Paul Whitley were frantically searching in the debris when Hogan first saw Baby Wyatt’s arm moving and rescued him from under the burning remains of the home. Shortly after, Trooper Bradford found Jennifer Mock alive, but trapped under a burning wall. Trooper Bradford was able to pull her from the home and together with other good Samaritans, moved all the victims to safety away from the burning remains of the home, where they cared for them until the arrival of Montgomery Firefighters and Montgomery County EMS.

The investigation into the cause of this tragic incident is ongoing. MCFMO Investigators are conducting a joint investigation with the Texas Railroad Commission to determine the source of the gas leak and the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Family members and friends have established a benefit fund for the victims and their families, and a fundraiser will be held August 4th from 11AM to 7PM at the Lone Star Community Center in Montgomery. For more information please click on the link to the event.
