warrant roundup clears almost 30,000 warrants in houston

HOUSTON, Texas –    Houstonians responded by the thousands in order to avoid the possibility of arrest during this month’s 2011 Great Texas Warrant Round-Up. As a result, the City of Houston’s Municipal Courts cleared almost 30,000 outstanding warrants.

The unified approach between Municipal Courts, the Houston Police Department, Harris County Constables and over 70 other Gulf Coast participants helped this initiative tremendously,” stated Captain Jonathan Zera. “Having regional partnerships showed the effectiveness of a coordinated, multi-agency effort,” Captain Zera added.

After weeks of televised news reports, radio announcements and mailed notices to notify the public of the statewide initiative, many individuals with outstanding warrants responded by coming forth early to handle their court matters. Unfortunately, not everyone heeded the warning, and for thousands, a trip to jail was not avoided.

While it is good that so many came forward to take care of their court matters during the grace period, many others did not. Those persons remain under the threat of arrest whether or not there is a Round-Up effort, and therefore we encourage them to call us or come in to resolve their overdue cases as soon as possible,” said Director & Presiding Judge Barbara E. Hartle.

Houston was among more than 300 statewide participants in this year’s Warrant Round-Up program which officially ended March 13, 2011. Each participating jurisdiction will send statistics to program organizers who are preparing a master list of statistics that will be published in April.
