HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE DROPS FELONY AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON TO A MISDEMEANOR DISORDERLY CONDUCT.

On March 28, 2020, deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office responded to the 20100 block of Yellow Canyon Falls Drive in
reference to a weapons disturbance. Upon deputies arriving, they observed a large crowd at the location and for safety reasons,
they were all detained.
Further investigation revealed that a male suspect, Derek Tappin was involved in a verbal altercation with a neighbor that turned
physical. A short time later Derek Tappin advised that he observed his neighbor approaching him while he was in his garage. Derek
Tappin was told that the neighbor had a weapon on him. With that information, he armed himself and fired a shot towards his
neighbor and missed but struck an occupied house across the street.
There were no injuries to anyone inside the residence.
“Derek Tappin was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Assistant District Attorney with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office requested a $50,000 bond and indicated the defendant presented a grave danger to the community. However, his bond was set at $40,000. The Harris County Hearing Officer ordered a mental health evaluation. The Harris County Hearing Officer Magistrate Lisa Porter on Sunday ordered no probable cause was found. The charge was then refiled as a misdemeanor disorderly conduct/firearm/deadly weapon in the Harris County Court at Law #9. He was given a $100 PR Bond.
Tappin was previously charged with assaulting a family member after he hit his then-girlfriend with his hand in 2012. For that, he was given one-year deferred probation which he completed a year later
