HARRIS COUNTY, TX- A multi-county search for a theft suspect ended in a deadly shootout Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Academy Sports + Outdoors store on FM 1960 near Bush Intercontinental Airport. Humble Police Chief Kris Battenfield said the department received a call at about 12:15 p.m. from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office advising that a theft suspect was headed south into the Humble area. Officers located a vehicle matching the description in the Academy parking lot, and two officers, a sergeant and a detective with 20 years on the department, made contact with the suspect. Gunfire was exchanged, and the suspect was struck. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither officer was injured, and both were wearing body cameras that recorded the encounter. The suspect’s name has not been released, and police have not said what the original theft involved. A large section of the parking lot was taped off for much of the afternoon as investigators worked the scene, and the public was asked to avoid the area. Humble police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
