MAN SHOT DURING SWAT STANDOFF

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas— A man was airlifted to the hospital Friday after being shot in the arm during a SWAT standoff in Liberty County, according to authorities.

Around 10 a.m., William Winfield, 47, was reported to be acting suicidal and firing a gun at passing cars at a residence along FM 1011 near Highway 146 between Liberty and Hardin.  When deputies arrived, they said they came under heavy gunfire.

Some of the deputies who were on the initial call and close to the home were extracted by the Baytown SWAT armored truck. They were iuninjured.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Baytown SWAT officers, surrounded the home.

Officers said the man barricaded himself inside. Investigators said the man was despondent over losing his girlfriend.

Negotiations were conducted over the next few hours until the standoff broke down around noon, at which time gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was hit.

Investigators say the suspect had numerous weapons inside the home, including rifles, handguns and ammunition.

He faces a number of charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
