DEPUTIES ATTACKERS IN CUSTODY

Four people are now in custody in connection with the shooting of an HCSO deputy on Friday, Sept. 2. That deputy wasn’t injured thanks to his ballistic resistant vest.  HCSO investigators have charged the following suspects that fired on Deputy A. Whitlock. 

Kendell Davis- Attempted capital murder of a Peace officer

Juan Frank Ybarra -Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer

Brianna Garza- Evading Arrest / Detention

Richard Rodriguez- Evading Arrest/ Detention

Deputy Whitlock was conducting a traffic stop on a late model Cadillac that was occupied by four individuals.  The vehicle turned on to a darkened street, at this point suspect Kendell Davis,  sitting in the rear driver side , leaned from the rear window and produced an assault rifle and fired at Deputy Whitlock’s vehicle several times.   The rounds struck the front of his vehicle, and one round went through the windshield and struck Deputy Whitlock in the center of his Trauma plate of his ballistic resistant vest.

This ceramic plate is credited in saving Deputy Whitlock’s life.  Deputy Whitlock called out via his radio for an assist the deputy, and additional units responded. The vehicle fled the scene, and was found several blocks away abandoned.  A perimeter was set up around the neighborhood, and two suspects were arrested a short time later. One suspect  was arrested later that afternoon.

 

Suspect Richard Rodriguez is not in custody, and is still at large.  He is described as being 5’4 to 5’5 in height with brown eyes and black colored hair.
