Heavy Rain and Isolated Strong to Severe Storms Possible Saturday

  • A strong cold front is expected to move across Southeast TX on Saturday, bringing scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms through late Saturday afternoon/early evening.
  • Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible along and ahead of the front with isolated gusty winds as the primary risk.
  • Locally heavy rainfall will also be possible, mainly along and south of a line from College Station to Huntsville.
    • Average rainfall amounts of 0.75 to 2 inches are expected, isolated higher amounts up to 3 inches possible. Greatest rainfall amounts expected along and south of I-10.
    • Minor street flooding is possible with the heaviest storms.
  •  Colder and breezy north winds are expected behind the front, with the strongest gusts along the coast.
  • A Gale Watch has been issued across the Gulf waters from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday.
  • Temperatures will quickly dip into the upper 30s to upper 50s early Sunday morning, followed by a cool Sunday with highs in the 50s.
  • Rain and storm chances return late Sunday afternoon into Monday as a disturbance moves into the region from the south.
Urban Flash Flood Messaging
Heavy rainfall is forecast for portions of Southeast Texas, including highly urbanized areas like the Houston metropolitan area. Based on forecast conditions, NWS Houston will be utilizing the following urban flash flood messaging for this event:

Minor Street Flooding
– Drive with caution. Cars may flood in low-lying areas. Ponding on roadways may increase risk of hydroplaning.
– Pay attention to the weather. Monitor the NWS, your local media, HCFCD and other official weather information sources.
– Rain may move repeatedly across the same area, causing a rapid rise on creeks and bayous. However, creeks and bayous are not likely to exceed their banks.
