Just before 6 pm DPS Trooper Al Eason was making a traffic stop on US 59 southbound between Northpark and FM 1314. As he looked to the right shoulder he spotted a single-vehicle accident that had just happened.
Porter Fire Department was dispatched and arrived on the scene to find an 18-year-old male driver from Pasadena still in the driver’s seat. He had flipped the vehicle at least once and hit the guardrail. As he hit the guardrail the end of it punctured his floorboard coming up through it and severing his leg. The guardrail continued to enter and collapse in the front seat.
As firefighters attempted to stop the bleeding and cut him out Life Flight was dispatched and the freeway and feeder were closed.
Firefighters spent almost fifteen minutes cutting him out of the wreckage. With no helicopter on the ground as of yet, it was determined to transport him by ground immediately to Hermann Hospital in the medical center in critical condition.
DPS investigated the scene and Trooper Zendt said witnesses advised her the vehicle was in the inside lane, he had not been speeding, making erratic movements when he went across all the lanes, flipped, and hit the rail.
He was returning to his Pasadena home from Stephen F Austin.
