MONTGOMERY COUNTY LOSS EQUALS TRAVIS COUNTY GAIN

Austin/Travis County Medical Director Mark Escott MCHD did not renew the contract for Dr. Mark Escott last year.  Many feel by not renewing the  contract it was a grrat loss to the Montgomery County EMS system. A doctor known almost worldwide for his contributions.  Last week Escott was named as the new Medical Director for Austin/Travis County EMS.

Escott, who will begin in Austin Sept. 1, began his emergency services career as an EMT, firefighter and paramedic 25 years ago in the Houston area. He currently serves as Director of the Division of Emergency Medical Services/Disaster Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of both the EMS Collaborative Research Group and the EMS Fellowship Program. Dr. Escott recently completed a three-year term as Medical Director of the Montgomery County Hospital District which was recognized in 2013 as the Texas EMS Service of the Year during his tenure.

Escott has served as Medical Director of Rice University’s Emergency Medical Services for the past six years, a program he founded while an undergraduate two decades ago. He also worked as Associate Medical Director for Emergency Services District No. 48 in West Harris County. Besides a man who wears many hats, Escott who resides in Magnolia with his famiy still works in the emergency room at Ben Taub Hospital and is a columnist and Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. JEMS (Journal of Emergency Medical Services) leads the industry in providing the EMS advanced provider, instructor and administrator with clinical breakthroughs, product reviews, continuing education and more.

Escott is board certified in emergency medicine and was one of the first EMS subspecialty board certified physicians in the United States. He is Chair-Elect of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Section of EMS-Prehospital Medicine. This association is the largest professional organization of emergency medicine board-certified physicians in the United States.

Escott earned his medical degree from Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. He also has a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts from Rice University.
