Tonight (Saturday) at midnight, Overall Grocery will close their doors for the last time. The combination grocery store, gas station, taxidermist, (and more) is an East County landmark, standing at the corner of Highway 59 and FM 1485 for nearly a half-century.
As a way to say “thank you” to the community, the are offering free food until they lock the door tonight. They have chicken and dumplings, egg rolls, sandwiches, banana pudding, pineapple upside down cake, peach cobbler, and more. Everyone is welcome.
Overall family patriarch, Floyd Overall, died unexpectedly in 2009, but his widow Nancy, and the rest of the family kept the business going, continuing to represent one of the few remaining local family-owned businesses amidst the area’s explosive growth. The store has not only provided goods and services, but it has also been somewhere locals could often be seen visiting. It also provided a good landmark when giving directions because everyone seemed to know the place.
The family has supported the community in many ways and their contribution won’t soon be forgotten, even though this time next week, nobody will be “stopping by Overall’s on the way home.”
