The Texas Forest Service has not yet determined how many acres burned Monday afternoon when Sundays fire jumped the line in several places. Unlike Sunday the fire was moving north and northeast toward Plum Grove and FM 1010.
For the second day in a row several residents were evacuated due to the fire moving toward their homes at a rapid rate. Several Departments set up lines of defense including tankers, brush trucks and boosters to attempt to stop the fire should it break out of the woods at the homes.
The Texas Forest was able to get a plow line around it but the fire kept moving toward the Notrtheast and into a pine plantation.
As firefighters were maintaining this other crews were attempting to contain the south end near the pipeline where the fire crossed also.
Texas Forest Service once again requested several dozers and a helicopter. A larger dozer was brought in on an 18-wheeler belonging to Mississippi Forest Service who is in Texas assisting. One of the Mississippi crew said it could be their last week as Mississippi has dried out and fires are now starting to erupt there.
Just before 9 p.m. tonight the fire was once again contained. A crew will monitor it throughout the night and at first light three grass trucks from local departments will make a pass putting out hot spots along the perimeter. It will then be followed up my dozers who plan to remain throughout the day unless another fire is reported that will take them away.
The dry spell is reported to be the worst since 1895. As firefighters were maintaining the line it wasn’t only snakes they had to watch for but scorpions also. One was captured in a water bottle by an interested firefighter.
