DEPUTY STRUCK BY 18-WHEELER

Late yesterday evening, Liberty County Deputy Sheriff James Sprayberry was injured on duty when his patrol vehicle was struck by an eighteen wheeler truck on U.S. Highway 59 in Liberty County.

Deputy Sprayberry has been with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office for several years now and is currently assigned to the Patrol Division, North Sector. While blocking the lanes of traffic on Highway 59 during a thunderstorm yesterday evening, Deputy Sprayberry positioned his marked patrol car in such a manner as to block vehicles from driving into the already wrecked cars and allow for DPS Troopers and other Deputies to assist other injured persons and to process the accident scene.

During this time, Deputy Sprayberry was inside of his patrol car with all emergency lights on, when an eighteen wheeler truck failed to stop in time, went into a skid, striking another vehicle, then crashing into Deputy Sprayberry’s patrol car, injuring him.  The other Law Enforcement Officers and civilians on scene were able to quickly move out of the way due to Deputy Sprayberrys vehicle blocking the path of the eighteen wheeler.

Deputy Sprayberry was transported to the Cleveland Regional Hospital and treated for injuries sustained as a result of this crash.  The persons inside of the other vehicle struck by the eighteen wheeler were also taken to the Cleveland Regional Hospital. This incident remains under investigation.
