TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO STABBING

GUNNELS,DONOVANANDREW

Just after 2 p.m. a DPS Trooper working Interstate 45 topped a 2012 maroon F-150 pickup just south of Shepherd Hill Road for speeding. The trooper identified the driver and returned to his patrol car to check his license and insurance with DPS communications. It was determined that a misdemeanor warrant had been issued for Donovan Gunnels, 18, of Conroe.

The trooper approached the back of the truck and ordered Gunnels out of the vehicle. Donovan asked the trooper if he was going to jail. Again the trooper repeated the command to exit the vehicle. Gunnels said he was not going to jail, pulled out a knife and stabbed himself one time in the neck. The trooper immediately pulled Gunnels from the truck and began life saving measures until MCHD and North Montgomery County Fire Department arrived on the scene.

Gunnels was transported to Conroe Regional Hospital in stable condition.

Gunnels was last arrested on September 28 for purchase furnish alcohol to a minor. Judge Mary Ann Turner issued a warrant for Gunnels arrest on October 21, after he failed to appear in County Court 4 on October 15.
